Galatians 4:25.
“Hagar corresponds to the present Jerusalem” — with examples that make sense for someone today. When Paul says “present Jerusalem”, he is not talking about geography. He is talking about a spiritual condition — a religious system built on law, performance, and pressure. Paul uses “present Jerusalem” as a symbol of any religious environment where people try to earn God’s acceptance through rules instead of grace. That symbol is still relevant today.
“When Religion Lives Under Empire and Legalism”
In Galatians 4:24, Paul explained that Hagar symbolizes the covenant of law, the system of human effort that produces spiritual slavery. Now, in verse 25, Paul expands the symbol: He connects Hagar → Sinai → slavery → present Jerusalem, showing that the religious world of his day — centered in Jerusalem — was trapped in a system of legalism and political oppression.
Paul’s point is simple and sharp: The earthly Jerusalem of his time was living under the wrong covenant.
📘 Explanation With Present‑Day Examples
“Paul draws a parallel between Hagar and the earthly Jerusalem of his time…”
Jerusalem in Paul’s day was:
under Roman occupation,
controlled by political pressure,
dominated by religious leaders who emphasized strict law‑keeping,
spiritually exhausted from trying to maintain identity through rules.
Paul says: “This system looks religious, but it’s actually slavery.”
Present‑day example
A church that looks holy on the outside but is controlled by:
fear,
pressure,
rules,
judgment,
performance.
It feels religious, but it produces bondage, not freedom.
“…which was under Roman rule…”
Roman rule meant:
heavy taxes,
military presence,
political tension,
constant surveillance,
limited freedom.
Jerusalem was not free politically — and Paul says it was not free spiritually either.
Present‑day example
A religious community under cultural or political pressure that responds by tightening rules:
“We must behave perfectly to survive.”
“We must follow every tradition to stay safe.”
“We must prove ourselves to God and society.”
Fear produces legalism, not faith.
“…and heavily influenced by Jewish legalism.”
Legalism in Paul’s day meant:
strict Sabbath rules,
purity laws,
food regulations,
ritual identity markers,
circumcision requirements,
endless traditions.
People were taught that obedience earned righteousness.
Paul says: “That’s Hagar’s covenant — slavery.”
Present‑day example
A Christian environment where:
holiness is measured by behavior,
acceptance depends on performance,
people fear failure,
rules matter more than relationship,
traditions matter more than transformation.
This is modern Jerusalem — religious but enslaved.
Putting It All Together: Paul’s Parallel in Today’s World
Paul’s chain is timeless:
Hagar → human effort Sinai → rule‑based religion Slavery → spiritual bondage Present Jerusalem → religious systems built on performance
Today, “present Jerusalem” appears wherever:
people try to earn God’s love,
churches emphasize rules over grace,
religion becomes a burden instead of a joy,
spiritual life feels like pressure instead of freedom.
Paul’s message is urgent: Don’t live in the religious city of slavery when Christ has brought you into the city of freedom.
Light Over the Temple — Freedom Rising
Prayer — “Free Me From Modern Jerusalem”
Father, Protect me from every form of modern bondage — from rule‑keeping that replaces relationship, from fear that replaces faith, from pressure that replaces promise.
Keep me from the spiritual slavery of performance, and lead me into the freedom of Your grace. Let my heart live in the Jerusalem above, not in the present Jerusalem of religious burden.
Teach me to rest in Christ, to trust Your promise, and to walk in the freedom You give Your children.
Amen.
