Galatians 4:8 tells one unified story of slavery → rescue → sonship.
The Gods That Were Not Gods
(Galatians 4:8) “Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods.”
1️⃣ Left Panel — “The Old Gods of Stone”
Long ago, in the days of Paul, the world was crowded with gods — or at least, things people called gods.
There stood Zeus, tall and cracked, lightning bolt drooping like a tired branch. Beside him, a sun idol squinted under its own heat. A wind‑spirit puffed its cheeks, trying to blow life into the air. A river‑god spilled water from a broken jug. A Hercules statue flexed proudly — until its arm fell off. A Roman emperor bust stared ahead with marble eyes that had never seen a thing.
People bowed. People feared. People hoped these statues would hear them.
But they never did.
A Jewish man stood there, scroll‑chains wrapped around his wrists. A Gentile woman clutched a tiny household idol. Both looked up at the silent statues and wondered:
“Are these really gods?”
And heaven whispered Paul’s words: “They were not gods at all.”
2️⃣ Center Panel — “The One Who Breaks Chains”
Then — into the middle of both worlds — ancient and modern, stone and screen, fear and confusion — stepped Jesus.
His robe glowed white and red. His skin shone warm like the sun of Galilee. His eyes held the kindness of a Father’s heart.
Chains stretched toward Him from both sides — scroll‑chains from the old world, cord‑chains from the new.
He took them in His hands. He pulled. He broke them.
Light burst from His chest, flooding both eras with warmth. And from the light rose a cry that had not been heard since Eden:
“Abba! Father!”
The Jewish man lifted his face. The Gentile woman dropped her idol. The modern man lowered his phone. The modern woman blinked through tears.
The same light touched every heart. The same Spirit whispered the same word:
“You are Mine.”
3️⃣ Right Panel — “The New Not‑Gods”
Today, the idols look different — but they are just as empty.
A horoscope wheel spins wildly, promising destiny. A floating crystal sparkles with pretend power. A “Vibes Only” cloud holds a clipboard, pretending to run the universe. A smartphone sits on a pedestal, glowing like a tiny god. A celebrity smiles from a giant screen, haloed by flashing lights.
A young man in a hoodie stares at the chaos. A young woman with a phone looks overwhelmed.
They begin to see the truth: These “gods” are no more alive than the statues of old. They cannot save. They cannot love. They cannot speak.
But then — the light from the center panel reaches them. Their hearts warm. Their eyes lift. And from deep within, a new cry rises:
“Abba! Father!”
The same cry as the ancient world. The same Spirit. The same freedom.
Unified Story Message
Across centuries, humanity keeps inventing gods — stone gods, nature gods, celebrity gods, digital gods. But none of them are real. None of them love. None of them save.
Only the Father — through Christ — by the Spirit — gives the cry of “Abba!” and turns slaves into sons.
Prayer
Father, thank You for opening our eyes to see that all other gods are lifeless. Thank You for sending Your Son to break our chains and Your Spirit to fill our hearts. Teach us to live free from every false master — ancient or modern — and to walk as Your sons and daughters. Amen.
