Small Steps

Galatians 4:1. Explanation of Barnes’ Note

Paul uses the word “elements” (Greek: stoicheia) to describe the basic, beginner‑level lessons people lived under before Christ.
The word originally meant a row of small steps, then came to mean letters, simple sounds, or the ABCs of any subject.

Barnes’ point is this:

  • Before Christ, God’s people were like little children learning their ABCs.
  • The Jewish Law gave them first lessons — simple, outward rules suited for spiritual childhood.
  • These “elements of the world” were basic, early-stage teachings, not the full maturity that comes through Christ.
  • Paul later calls them “beggarly elements” (Gal. 4:9) because compared to the riches of Christ, they were small and incomplete.
  • Both Jews (under the Law) and Gentiles (under idols, rituals, and philosophies) were learning elementary lessons, not yet living in the freedom of full-grown heirs.

Paul’s words describe both Jews under the Law and Gentiles under paganism. Before Christ, humanity lived in spiritual childhood — bound by rules, rituals, and fear. The Law and pagan worship were both elementary lessons, preparing hearts for the maturity of faith revealed in Christ.

The “elements of the world” were the spiritual ABCs God used to teach humanity before Christ brought the full truth.

Title: “From Idols to Inheritance”

Before Christ, both Jews and Gentiles were like children under guardians — the Jews under the Law, and the Gentiles under pagan systems.
The Gentiles worshiped gods made by human hands, followed rituals to earn favor, and feared spirits that demanded offerings.
Paul says that when Christ came, He broke those chains — calling people out of superstition and fear into the freedom of sonship.

Layman’s Explanation

1️⃣ Pagan Worship — The Old Bondage

  • People bowed to idols of stone and metal, believing they controlled rain, harvest, and health.
  • They performed rituals and sacrifices to appease angry gods.
  • Their religion was built on fear and performance, not love or grace.
  • These were the “elements of the world” — the basic, earthly ways people tried to reach the divine.

2️⃣ The Turning Point — Christ’s Call

  • When the gospel reached pagan hearts, it said: “You don’t have to earn favor — God gives it freely through His Son.”
  • The idols lost their power; the rituals lost their meaning.
  • The people realized that the Creator was not distant or angry — He was a Father who adopted them through Christ.

3️⃣ Christianity — The New Freedom

  • Instead of bowing to idols, believers now worship in spirit and truth.
  • Instead of fearing punishment, they rest in grace.
  • Instead of endless rituals, they live by faith.
  • The same people who once offered sacrifices now offer their hearts — transformed from slaves to sons.

Example from Gentile perspective: “The Broken Shrine”

Imagine a man in Galatia who once kept a small shrine to a local god.
Every morning, he lit incense and whispered prayers for protection.
When he heard Paul preach Christ, he realized that the true God didn’t live in stone or demand fear — He lived in hearts.
The man took his idol, set it aside, and lifted his hands to heaven.
That broken shrine became a symbol of his new life — no longer a servant of fear, but a child of grace.

Example from Jewish perspective: The ABC Classroom vs. the Grown‑Up Library

Imagine a child in kindergarten learning the alphabet.
He traces big letters on paper, repeats simple sounds, and practices basic words.
These lessons are good — but they are not the whole world of reading.

Now imagine that same child as an adult.
He walks into a huge library filled with wisdom, stories, and knowledge.
He no longer needs alphabet blocks or tracing sheets.
Those were training tools, not the final goal.

Paul says that before Christ:

  • The Jews were in the ABC classroom of the Law.
  • The Gentiles were in the ABC classroom of worldly customs and beliefs.
  • Both were learning basic lessons suited for spiritual childhood.

But when Christ came, God opened the library — the full truth, full freedom, and full inheritance of being His sons and daughters.

In either instance: To go back to the old systems would be like a grown adult returning to kindergarten to trace letters again.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling us out of darkness and superstition into Your marvelous light.
Thank You that we no longer bow to idols or trust in rituals, but in the living Christ.
Teach us to walk as sons and daughters, free from fear and full of faith.
Let our lives show the world the beauty of Your grace.
Amen.
