How Jesus Lived Under the Law

Galatians 4:4. Jesus placed Himself under the same rules and expectations the Jewish people lived under — and obeyed them perfectly, something no one else could do.

How Jesus Lived Under the Law

1️⃣ He was circumcised on the eighth day

Gospel example: Luke 2:21
Every Jewish boy was required by the Law to be circumcised on the eighth day.
Jesus — though He was the Lawgiver — submitted to this command just like every other Jewish child.

Layman’s terms:
He entered Jewish life the same way every other Jewish boy did, obeying the Law from His first week of life.

2️⃣ He was presented at the Temple with the required sacrifice

Gospel example: Luke 2:22–24
Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple and offered the sacrifice Moses commanded — “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

Layman’s terms:
Jesus grew up in a home that kept the Law carefully, even in the small details.

3️⃣ He kept the Sabbath perfectly

Gospel examples: Luke 4:16; Mark 1:21
Jesus regularly attended synagogue on the Sabbath, read Scripture, and honored the day exactly as the Law required.

Layman’s terms:
He never broke the Sabbath — even when He healed, He fulfilled its true purpose: mercy, rest, and restoration.

4️⃣ He celebrated all required Jewish feasts

Gospel examples:

  • Passover — Luke 2:41; Luke 22
  • Tabernacles — John 7
  • Dedication — John 10:22

Layman’s terms:
Jesus didn’t skip the festivals. He kept every feast God commanded Israel to observe — perfectly, joyfully, and faithfully.

5️⃣ He obeyed the moral commands without a single failure

Gospel examples:

  • He never lied
  • He never lusted
  • He never hated
  • He never acted selfishly
  • He never sinned (John 8:46; 1 Peter 2:22)

Layman’s terms:
He lived the life we were supposed to live — flawless obedience from the heart.

6️⃣ He fulfilled the Law’s demands even when it cost Him

Gospel example: Matthew 5:17
Jesus said He came not to abolish the Law but to fulfill it — every command, every symbol, every prophecy.

Layman’s terms:
He didn’t take shortcuts. He completed the Law’s entire curriculum.

Why This Matters

Jesus didn’t stand above the Law looking down on us.
He stepped under it, lived within it, and obeyed all of it — so He could redeem everyone who failed to keep it.

This is why Paul says He was “born under the Law.”

In Acts 12:23-24, God deals with Herod Agrippa I who was responsible for the death of Apostle James and the imprisonment of Apostle Peter. All of this was done to placate the Jews. I suggest you go back and listen to the entire study of Acts 12 on Spotify (Five Minutes in the Word)! I found it interesting that two historians have completely different versions of death of Agrippa. Josephus says that Agrippa saw an owl sitting over his head, which he recognized as a messenger of evil to him. Eusebius, quoting Josephus Eccl. Hist.,' 2. 10.), leaves out the owl, and says that Agrippa saw an angel sitting over his head, whom he recognized as the cause of his sufferings. (Pulpit Commentary) Jews believed that owls are bringing messages of bad news. They also believe that an angel is assigned to each person Again, this is interesting because Agrippa was a Jew!  Herod knew the word and worship of the living God. But he accepted idolatrous honors without rebuking the blasphemy.

About the Book of Acts

  I began the study of the Book of Acts on October 24, 2022. I'll be sharing some interesting tidbits I learned in my studies.  The Book of Acts is the activity of the Holy Spirit.  Jesus promised His Apostles that we would receive power after the Holy Spirit endues them.  The Holy Spirit came with power upon the believers in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit continued to guide and strengthen the church and its leaders throughout the events reported in the Acts.  He continues to guide and strengthen our lives and churches today.

The Gift of Tongues at Pentecost

Acts 2.  On the day of Pentecost, the rushing mighty wind and the tongues, as of fire, accompanied the true gift – being filled with the Holy Spirit .  In response to the filling of the Holy Spirit, those present (not only the twelve apostles) began to speak with other tongues. These were languages that they were never taught, and they spoke these languages, speaking as the Spirit gave them utterance. People from Galilee (Galileans) were known to be uncultured and poor speakers.   This was all the more reason to be impressed with their ability to speak eloquently in other languages. “Galileans had difficulty pronouncing gutturals and had the habit of swallowing syllables when speaking; so they were looked down upon by the people of Jerusalem as being provincial” (Longenecker). This makes me think of my Dad.  He had a speech impediment, until he began preaching!  When he got up to preach, his speech was excellent.  But, he still could not sing.  Th...
